An incredibly important part of owning or renting a home is making sure the maintenance is up to date. This can mean projects that you are responsible for yourself, or making sure the landlord or handyman in charge of your rental property is made aware of any problems that you come across. In order to stay on top of little home improvement projects that should be completed every month, we recommend making a checklist so that everything is always accounted for. This way, you can inspect and upkeep everything that needs it to avoid a potential disaster.

Here is our example of a monthly checklist:

·         Furnace – clean filter and remove build up

·         Water – if necessary, check water softener and replenish salt

·         Faucets – clean faucets and showerheads to remove mineral build up and improve pressure

·         Drains – inspect sink and tub drains for clogs

·         Safety – check smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, or sprinklers

·         Vents – vacuum dust from floor vents, make sure indoor and outdoor vents aren’t blocked, and test HVAC system

·         Water Heater – flush out hot water from water heater to remove any accumulated sediment

·         Garbage Disposal – test function and clean by flushing with hot water and baking soda
